Venice: Impressions from Near and Far

Extra-curricular project and photo competition

The competition is an extracurricular project tied to the course Venice and Globalization taught by Michael Hardt in the Joint Undergraduate Program at Venice International University.

The goal of this competition is to encourage students to analyze and reflect upon Venice and Globalization through images, shooting photographs which do not have to simply portray a situation, but have to create an intellectual process which can convey meaning and information about the deep links and relationships between Venice and Globalization.

The students of the Fall 2006 course Venice and Globalization will take part in a seminar with photographer Stefano Graziani, and go on a number of field trips around Venice, Mestre and Marghera.

The competition is however open to other students who are interested in trying their hand at interpreting the theme Venice and Globalization. The title of the competition “Venice: Impressions from near and far” represents the fact that the students who will participate in the competition are from all over the world. The Italian students have lived in Venice for years and know the city very well. Their view will be contrasted by the (perhaps fresher) view of the relative newcomers from the U.S., Israel, Japan and Germany. We are looking forward to seeing how these students interpret this extraordinary city.

Deadline: December 7, 2006
