S1403A Italian for Foreigners - Beginner - CEFR level A1

The place in the Italian for Foreigners course will be granted, you can choose a preferred time slot, however the final assignment to a group will be made by the instructors after an online placement test before your departure and interview during orientation week.


Please remind that you have to be registered, accepted and attend at least other two VIU courses, in order to access this course. Please also check in advance with your university international office if this course is part of your requirements.

The following criteria will be considered:
- your class schedule (you should focus on organizing your schedule to maximize the possibility of receiving credit recognition from your home university)
- number of nationalities represented in the class
- skill level and aptitude of the student
- number of participants in the class
Once you have been assigned to an Italian group you will always attend the same class at the same time slot every day (from Monday to Thursday)


Beginner level

This is the first course for beginner students who wish to understand and speak Italian. The material will include basic vocabulary, grammar and expressions that are used in daily situations. The course is structured in order to practice the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing.

 

Course objectives

the course aims to develop:

-a mastery of grammar basics

-listening and reading comprehension

-an ability to communicate in Italian, both orally and in writing

-an increased knowledge of Italian society and culture

 

Tutoring

Students can ask their teacher for any extra materials they may need to personalize their program further or to review some grammar points.

 

During classes, students will produce some written documents concerning their own experience in Venice as a foreign student (e.g. small Venice guide for foreign students).

This is a 56-hour course. The first half of the semester is intensive: the classes meet four times a week (for six weeks). In the second half of the semester the classes meet twice a week till the end of the semester, leaving time for self-study and practice in real-life situations.

 

Intermediate level

This language course is designed so that students can practice their grammar skills and increase their ability to understand, speak, read and write Italian, while emphasizing the development of reading comprehension. It includes grammar review and an introduction to new grammar skills, with continued vocabulary study, conversational practice, short composition, cultural and literary readings and some work with video.

 

Course objectives

This course is designed to improve:

-the student’s ability to read and write Italian

-listening comprehension

-the ability to communicated in Italian

-the knowledge of Italian society and culture
