A Human Rights based approach to addressing trafficking

Trafficking in persons is a serious crime and a grave violation of human rights. Almost every country in the world is affected by trafficking, whether as a country of origin, transit or destination for victims. During the lecture, the UN Advisor Youla Haddadin will explain the UN response to human trafficking, focusing in particular on sex trafficking. She will discuss why human trafficking disproportionately affects women. She will argue that a Human rights-based approach to addressing trafficking is necessary.

Y. Haddadin is Advisor on Human Trafficking at the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). After graduating at the University of Jordan law school and practicing as a private Lawyer, she collaborated with different international institutions active in the human rights and women defense, sexual violence in conflict settings and peace building: she was Deputy Director of the Arab Institute for Human rights, a Tunisia- based regional NGO that provides training to civil society and human rights defenders, 1994- 2000 Director of the People to People - Palestinian Peace building program, and from 2000 to 2004 senior legal Advisor on legal, judicial and public administration reform projects, drafting number of laws and by- laws on elections, justice and violence against women. Since 2004 she joined the United Nations Human Rights High Commissioner’s office, as Deputy Representative in Palestine first, then Advisor on Sexual Violence in and leading in 2010 the OHCHR’s work on the Security Council’s agenda on Women, Peace and Security.
