51st Venice Art Biennale - Inner Island Workshops

Cittadellarte artists and TeDIS Center researchers conceived together three workshops, investigating the relationship between artistic creativity and society, environment, sustainability and economy. The workshops were aimed at local and international students, artists, researchers and creative professionals.
The results of the workshops were presented on September 30, 2006, during a conference and an exhibition organized on the island of San Servolo for the conclusion of the Cittadellarte-Fondazione Pistoletto project organized in cooperation with Venice International University.
- Art-City-Society: new visions and perspectives for Venice

The first workshop involved an interdisciplinary group in the creation of projects of public interest for Venice and its lagoon. Through the engine of creativity, they sought to enhance people’s capacities and the region’s material resources. Artists, curators, philosophers, researchers and architects highlighted alternative viewpoints on the city and its problems by presenting shared projects for the improvement of the city’s cultural, environmental and productive contexts. The research focused on the design and development of three projects: the first promoted a real record for the island of Pellestrina. The project tried to express the island and its culture through the enhancement and revival of its identity by producing a record-breaking length of traditional lace; the second project was the design of an info-point named “Questionpoint”, displaying T-shirts with provoking catchwords in Venetian dialect and other languages and a video-documentary of interviews aimed at encouraging social dialog between subjects who experience the city in different times and modalities. Finally, the last project highlighted the state of neglect and the non-use of green areas in Venice, many of them enclosed within private walls, fences or gates. The project imagined a situation where people were able to live their free time in green areas and grow organic fruits, flowers and vegetables. The projects did not aim to give definite solutions, but instead to invite people to find and share solutions, by investigating each one’s ability to favor relationships and coexistence.

- Italy in person: the cultural mission of the Italian product

The second workshop aimed at reflecting on the current situation of the Italian product from the viewpoint of Veneto’s enterprises actually involved in production and in the artistic and cultural support of some artists.
The posters and a small publication presented as the final result of the workshop, make clear the importance of ethics, respect for the individual and the environment, with special attention to investments in non-economical values in order to attain effective well-being.
The unusual working group, made up of artists, students and designer drew up concrete proposals aimed at a responsible and long-term development of Made in Italy products in full respect of the values of the person, seen as a sensitive individual with specific needs and potential that must emerge to reach effective development. The future of production cannot exclude respect for the individual and its environment, understood as ecological, working and home environments: production that is indeed respectful of individuals, both producers and consumers; that uses culture and creativity to respond to concrete needs, transforming consumption into the consequence of a coherent and responsible philosophy.
A fundamental proposal was conceived during the course; it concerns a meaningful transformation of the concept of the Made in Italy brand. For example, the working group created a new label based on concrete values instead of the product’s simple geographical location: the Made How label, a system defining modalities of production.
These activities strengthened the continuing relationship between Cittadellarte-Fondazione Pistoletto, Venice International University and other organizations that operate in the city of Venice: Iuav University of Venice, Querini Stampalia Foundation, Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation, Emergency, Tam Associati, Lago, Morbid Line, Nice, Rudy Project and Up Design.

- The responsible transformation of society through creativity

The third workshop was based on the huge impact of innovations and digital technologies on society; the workshop wanted to draw a pathway - starting from the idea of the user-spectator in new media – which defines guidelines for an active and one-to-one use of new information technologies. In this sense, democratic participation in the digital revolution is actually possible and the use of free software is its principal expedient.
The case analysis of Creative Commons licenses allowed the workshop’s participants to consider the practical application of a new legal approach to creativity and communication.
