In 2012 the Academic Council initiated a process of Curriculum Development of the Globalization Program. The resulting restructuring of the program draws on the strengths of the program and on nearly 20 years of experience in developing programs among many partners, of harmonization of curricula and credit recognition.

The most significant change is that 10 core courses will be on offer every semester. Three themes have been identified as the core of the program: Venice & Italy; Cultures of the World; Global Challenges. The interdisciplinary nature of the program is maintained and strengthened in the belief that students exposed to interdisciplinary approaches develop the ability to think analytically and can creatively embrace new ideas.

The specialization tracks in the fields of cultural heritage and sustainable development will continue, and are bolstered by additional courses. These tracks are strongly connected to the internship opportunities offered to students, one of the success stories of VIU in recent years.

The expected outcomes are a clear, well-defined and stable program; smoother credit recognition which will result in increased enrolment; and new opportunities for cooperation among member universities.

The Globalization Program will continue to provide a powerful learning experience in which students develop their capacity for critical thinking, and creative problem solving. In addition, the interdisciplinary and intercultural nature of the program, with each student bringing her/his own personal experience to discussions, means that students are exposed to perspectives different from their own, and consequently experience the benefits of embracing difference. Students of the Globalization Program are thus more prepared for graduate and professional study and for careers in new and emerging fields.
