F1110 The Body in a Globalized World

The human body is universal – every human being has one. Every person\'s body is highly private. Many people have nothing but their own bodies. The bodies of the rich and the mighty are vulnerable and erratic as well. The body is the natural target of cultural inscriptions, adoration as well as torture and abuse. The body is the main means for work and of pleasure.
The course will introduce the students to contemporary trends in the sociology, philosophy and cultural history of the human body through a series of case studies, each reflects a different moral and political problem typical of globalization.
The cases will raise diverse issues – children\'s bodies, sexuality, culture and the body, epidemic diseases, the dead body, the body as subject and the body as object.
Centuries before globalization became a staple concept, Venice has always been a furnace of intercultural interactions. Six of the lectures resort to Venice (or Veneto) as a field for studying a problem related to globalization (Anatomy, childbirth, breastfeeding, cultural circumcision, medical tourism and biometric identification systems).
Goals of the course: the course will familiarize the student with contemporary theories of the body, as they are applied to contemporary issues typical of globalization. The course will raise students\' awareness of and critical approach to contemporary political, moral and regulatory issues.

Required preliminary knowledge: none.
Background in sociology / cultural studies is helpful.
