F0509 The Power of Beauty – The interdependence and interaction of Art and Politics in Europe throughout history

This course intends to make clear that the personal and social perception of beauty is not only a cultural but also a political phenomenon. Throughout history there can be noticed an interdependence and interaction between art and politics. Personal, social and political power has always tried to instrumentalize beauty in all of its appearances – especially in form of the classical disciplines architecture, sculpture, painting, literature and music, but also in form of ceremonies and dances.
In this course – after general introductions by the professor – the students are expected to develop and present papers, following the enclosed plan of the course. These papers will be discussed after their presentation.
