The city of Jerusalem is a unique city. It is a Holy City for three major religions – Judaism, Christianity and Islam. There is no other place like this in the world. More-ever, Jerusalem exists for nearly 4000 years and operated like a city for most of its existence. It history is very unique as, through its long history it was held by different regimes, and different religion, each tried to shape the city according to its views. Each regime left some remains in the city, thus Jerusalem can be learned as a laboratory for different styles of a city. Today, Jerusalem is the capital city of the modern state of Israel, but no country in the world accepted this role of the city.
The course will present the different periods of the city life, going through the Biblical period, the Babylonian, Persian, Hellenistic, Independence Jewish state, Roman, Byzantine, Moslem Arabs, Christian Crusaders, Moslem Mameluks, Moslem Turkish Ottoman, Christian British and Modern Jewish Israeli state periods, in order to learn how different ideologies created different cities in a small area of about 1 sq. km.
