VIU International Mobility Program: update from Shanghai

Chiara Manzoni, a Ca' Foscari graduate student in Economics and Management of the Arts, is currently in Shanghai, China, doing an internship at MoCA, Museum of Contemporary Art, and carrying out research for her final dissertation. After attending the Fall 2012 edition of the Globalization Program at VIU she was awarded a scholarship for the VIU International Mobility Program.

This is what she told us about her experience:

"Here at MoCA, Museum of Contemporary Art, I'm doing research for my final dissertation on the theme of museum management and I help MoCA staff with everyday tasks in the museum in order to understand how an art museum works. Until November 20, I worked for the Esprit Dior exhibition, inspired by the spirit of the visionary designer Christian Dior. The exhibition displayed more than one hundred dresses that epitomize Christian Dior's revolutionary work in design together with photographs of Patrick Demarchelier and works by some of the major contemporary Chinese artists such as Liu Jianhua, Lin Tian Miao, Qiu Zhijie, Yan Pei Ming, Zeng Fanzhi, Zhang Huan and Zheng Guogu, who gave their own vision of the Dior spirit. Since it was quite sensational, articles about the exhibition appeared in magazines and newspapers all over the world and one of my duties was the press review. I was also in charge of the guided visits, in English, Italian and Spanish. Now I am helping with the organization of the educational activities for the upcoming exhibit on Yayoi Kusama, a contemporary Japanese painter.

"The first few weeks in Shanghai were really hard, as I had to adapt to a world and a reality totally unknown to me, and doing so in a working environment makes it even more difficult! Anyway, despite all the difficulties and unforeseen circumstances, the experience of the museum had been very positive. I am grateful for the opportunity to see a piece of the world so far away from mine given to me by VIU.
By mid-December I will be at home in Italy, but I'm already looking forward to coming back to my new home in China!"
