VIU-NDRC Climate Change: Policy, GHG Inventory and Communication

The last course of the year organized in cooperation with the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) covers a very specific topic linked to climate change: greenhouse gas emission inventories.
A sound data collection and management system is the basis for building a greenhouse gas emissions inventory, which, in turn, could be a very important tool in the hands of policy makers. By knowing which are the most significant sources of emissions, policies and measures can be drafted to promote their reductions in the most polluting sectors.
The 39 participants taking part in the course from October 13 to 24, will be introduced to the policies promoted and the tools put in place by the European Union and Italy with the aim to tackle the increase of greenhouse gas emissions. Lectures and site visit will focus on the specific requirements set up for the compilation of emission inventories both at local and national level, as well as on how to use the results for a better management of carbon markets. A site visit to a company subjected to emission limits under the framework of the European Emission Trading Scheme (EU ETS) is organized, as to present a best practice for greenhouse gas emissions control, reduction and communication to the public.
