Fall 2013 co-curricular activities

VIU arranges a wide range of co-curricular activities every semester. Upcoming events include:

Biennale Sessions: on Friday October 4 VIU students will be guided through the national pavillions of the Giardini della Biennale to enjoy the 55th International Art Exhibition. After the guided tour a debate session with VIU faculty on the theme of Cultural Dilemmas in the Digital Age has been organized at the Biennale ASAC library at the Giardini. The participants tickets will be valid for three days so that the students can explore the Biennale in depth.

American Feminist Movement: Prof. William Chafe taught at VIU in 2007 and returns on October 16 for a guest lecture on the feminist movement in the US. Chafe is Alice Mary Baldwin Professor of History, Emeritus, at Duke University. He is author and editor of thirteen books. His work has focused on civil rights history, women's history, and modern political history.

Michelangelo and the Sistine Chapel: during the mid-term break students will have the chance to take an 8-day trip to Florence, Naples and Rome. While in Rome, the art historian Annarita Paolieri will give a guided tour of the Sistine Chapel, one of the most extraordinary masterpieces of Michelangelo's oeuvre.

Before the trip Dr. Paolieri will give two introductory lectures at VIU (October 18 and October 25) which will develop the following contents: "Michelangelo and 16th Century Rome", "The Sistine Chapel" and "Conservation and Restoration".

The purpose of the co-curricular program is to allow students to deepen their understanding of the topics addressed within the courses and to give them the opportunity to enjoy the exceptional cultural opportunities available while socializing with their peers. The activities are both fun and intellectually stimulating and contribute considerably to the enriching experience of spending a semester at VIU. Three activities are organized every week.
