Training on Solid Waste in Mexico

After the successful experience of the first Training course on "Climate Change and Sustainable Development at Urban Level" held at Venice International University in October 2012, a second course will take place from May 27 to 31, 2013 in Mexico City addressed to participants from Mexico City Government.

The Training Program is organized in cooperation with the Italian Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea and ICE Messico. The Courses are addressed to policy makers selected from Mexico City Government – Gobierno del Distrito Federal and in particular from the Ministry of the Environment - Secretaría del Medio Ambiente.

The forthcoming Training session in Mexico City focuses on "Sustainability and Integrated Solid Waste Management" and represents the second phase of the Advanced Training Program on Fostering and Practicing Sustainability, that falls within the activities envisioned in the Memorandum of Understanding between the Italian Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea and the Ministry for the Environment of Mexico City Government for the co-operation in the field of climate change.

The main objective of this capacity building activity is to provide selected participants (namely Mexico City Municipal officers, decision makers and local technicians/operators) with the latest knowledge developments and strategic policies in the area of Sustainability and Waste Management, with special reference to administrative and managerial aspects, waste treatment technologies and waste collection strategies.

The overall objective of the training session is to widen the knowledge of participants, building their awareness and expertise on Integrated Solid Waste Management, in order to better deal with the real local context and needs of Mexico City; in this perspective, the training session will follow a gaps-filling approach.

The lecturers involved are experts coming from important Italian universities and will confront with Mexican experts in order to better understand their needs and address the issues raised during the course. A special thank goes to professor Raffaele Cossu of the University of Padova, and the colleagues of the Universities of Siena, La Sapienza, Tuscia and ACEA for accepting the invitation to take part in the Mexico City Training.
